Fun Poker today [Jul. 24th, 2008|02:00 am]

scsuhockey10

LoL is all I have to say about 70 buck tourneys at Ceasars. After I bustod out of the Barge online, I was planning on going to play the 150 tourney with my buddy from CT, he was one of my old college hockey team mates and was one of the people always down for a game when we used to play back in the college days.  I used to think he was one of the best players I played with. Now I feel he made a few pretty serious NL mistakes but oh well. I never made it in time to play the 150 So I railled him for a while with his wife. He made a pretty bad re rasie then fold of 10 10 Then hand went something like guy opened to 2000 in 300 600 he made it 6000 guy then went all in for 8200 total making him only have to call 2200 and he  folds 10 10. gives some speach like at best its a race.. IM RIPPING OUT MY HAIR from the back ground... he folds the 1010  face up other guy smiles a tad and mucks. I was like wow.. but anyway.... He ended up in 10th for no pay it only paid top 6. So after the tourney i decided I wanted to mess around and play the 70 dollar 50 max tourney... I actually considerd playing blind just for fun to see what would happen. .. But went against it to the point of just play super Agro and see if i can build a huge stack and have some fun. FInally after taking my 3k starting stack to 5k with not one show down ... in the 25-50 level i was pretty happy.. then UTG i get KK open for 125 button who now was terrible but a luck box makes it 1000.. im like um huh.. folded back to me I obviously Jam he snap calls and has AA.. and i ship him all my hard earned chips leaving me 800. No biggy casue then I get the speach of a life time from the guy next to me.. On A.. how bad my jam there was with KK and How did I not know he had AA and how that was the worst play of KK hes ever seen.. anyway.. I laugh about it and be like yah I did play that kinda bad.. Man I suck at this game. so anyway .. the funny part of  the story now.. I go on and fold a few hands then this hand comes up.. Guy standerd opens to now 300.. were up to 50-100 now.. Guy who belittled my terrible play with KK flat calls from bb.. Im like ok fun time the flop comes Qc 10c 10d... and went check check... turn was t he 4c the terrible guy checks again and the other guy checks .. river was the 2c .. now both of these guys were up some chips.. Bad guy checks to him again.. now other guy bets 300....back on the bad guy he hollywoods for about no lie 3 min then anounces rasie.. makes it 900.. other  guy instantly shovs and then gets snap called by bad guy.. who now yells NUTS I CALL.. other guy flips of 2 red qs for qs full. kinda sadly after hearing nuts... . and Idiot filps over the Ac 5d... now im not one to bad mouth.. BUT GOD IT FELT SO NICE TO JUST BUST OUT LAUGHING......  like tears were comming down i was laughing so hard...to be like man good  game hate when i run a flush into a boat and yell nuts.... oh well i guess that was my good karma of the tourney.. 3 hands later i ran As 4s into a k in the bb and GG me.. but to see that guy Yell NUTS with an ace high flush on the paired board and tell me I dont know how to play KK .. Made me feel so much better...lolol

catching up to the cool kids [Jul. 23rd, 2008|08:56 pm]

This is posted using my shiny new 3g iPhone. The keyboard is either super annoying or just takes some getting used to. It seems weird to me that there are no period or comma keys on the main keyboard -- they seem common enough to want to avoid needing two keypresses. I need to learn when to trust the typo correction and keep going, and when to stop and fix it.

I'm now finally getting around to ripping my cd collection, which everyone else did 5+ years ago, but this is my first mp3 player. I guess the next step is to make some playlists -- my first attempt at listening to my partially ripped collection involved a lot of fast forwarding.

The other thing I finally got around to today was seeing the dark knight. Wow. That was easily the best comic book movie, and maybe the best genre movie I have ever seen. Actually, it would probably make my top n list of movies generally had I such a thing. Really excellent -- the characters and arcs in this movie were more ambitiously imagined and then even more impressively realized than any comparable movie I can think of. Even with my raised expectations of Heath Ledger's performance, he surpassed them.

Somewhat strangely I think the title character was maybe the third most central to the story. The most important character arc was that of Harvey Dent, as a symbol of and a contrast to both Batman and Gotham itself. The Joker as a character was as fiendish a character as I've seen on film, but he wasn't just eeevil: he was a sort of guide, both successfully with two face, and with somewhat more complicated results with Batman. One thing that I loved is that the Joker's insane monologues were generally the most insightful lines of the movie. It's so rare that the villain in an action movie is complicated and actually coherent and makes sense. And in this case scary and creepy as hell.

I do wonder what they'll do for the next one. Most Batman villains are frankly kind of doofy, like the penguin or mr. Freeze or poison ivy. Catwoman is fun but not main bad guy material. And to follow up the dark knight you really need something... dark.

Sleeping Around Craiglist [Jul. 23rd, 2008|10:10 pm]

Great article:
We are both middle-aged women who have spent the past 11 months sleeping around Craigslist. At an age when most women were sending their firstborns off to college, we found ourselves -- through chance and circumstance -- single, tumescent and ripe for adventures. Those adventures have spanned 10 counties and four states and involved roughly 45,000 e-mailed words, 27 phone calls, 36 face-to-face initial dates and 13 actual lovers -- and re-aggravated our carpal tunnel syndrome from all the typing.

Years before embarking on Craigslist, both of us had experienced sexual abandonment. We were both hungry for intimacy and physical touch after years of wandering in the desert. Our lives were on similar trajectories.

HBO has done it again. If you aren't watching Generation Kill, you should be. Think "Band of Brothers" for the Iraq war.

McCain gaffes pile up; critics pile on

From page 2 of that article:

That referred to an ABCNews.com posting asserting that McCain appeared to confuse Iraq and Afghanistan in a "Good Morning America" interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer, who asked whether the "the situation in Afghanistan is precarious and urgent."

McCain responded: "I'm afraid it's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border." The ABC posting added: "Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border. Afghanistan and Pakistan do."

Unfortunately for McCain, that wasn't an isolated slip. Among the other lapses:

- "Somalia" for "Sudan": As recounted in a reporter's pool report from McCain's Straight Talk Express bus on June 30, the senator said while discussing Darfur, a region of Sudan: "How can we bring pressure on the government of Somalia?"

Senior adviser Mark Salter corrected him: "Sudan."

- "Germany" for "Russia": A YouTube clip from last year memorializes McCain referring to Vladimir Putin of Russia -- following a trip to Germany -- as "President Putin of Germany."

- This spring, McCain said troops in Iraq were "down to pre-surge levels" when in fact there were 20,000 more troops than when the surge policy began.

- Also this spring, McCain twice appeared to mistake Sunnis and Shiites, two branches of Islam that split violently.

- In Phoenix earlier this month, McCain referred to Czechoslovakia, which has been divided since Jan. 1, 1993, into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He also referred to Czechoslovakia during a debate in November and a radio show in April.

- In perhaps the most curious incident, McCain said earlier this month that as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, he had tried to confuse his captors by giving the names of Pittsburgh Steelers starting players when asked to identify his squadron mates. McCain has told the story many times over the years -- but always correctly referred to the names he gave as members of the Green Bay Packers.

There's also this:

Republican John McCain pushed back on Wednesday against Democratic criticism that he misstated when the troop buildup ordered by President Bush began, saying elements were put in place before Bush announced the strategy in early 2007.

He told reporters during an unscheduled stop in a super market that, what the Bush administration calls "the surge" was actually "made up of a number of components," some of which began before the president's order for more troops.

It's all a matter of semantics, he suggested.

Yeah, I'm sure Obama would get a pass from the right if he said that.

Names for small market NBA teams [Jul. 23rd, 2008|12:25 pm]

[info]topfivelist:

The NBA has decided to allow the new owners of the Seattle SuperSonics to move the franchise to Oklahoma and rename it the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Approving the move not only deprives the people of Seattle of a team they've had four decades,
it gives a team to Oklahoma City, bypassing at least a dozen larger markets like San Diego,
San Jose, Jacksonville, Austin, Baltimore, Ft. Worth, El Paso, Louisville and Las Vegas.

Since the league is awarding franchises to smaller cities and towns, it's only fair that
TopFive be allowed to name those teams, right?

These are hilarious:

The Top 15 Names for Small-Market NBA Teams (Part I)

The Top 15 Names for Small-Market NBA Teams (Part II)

Although I didn't get "Toledo Shuffle" until I Googled it. Kinda obscure?

Product placement [Jul. 23rd, 2008|12:11 pm]

evwhore
Does it bother anyone else that there's product placement on a TV news show? I don't watch the news on TV, so I don't know how recent a trend this is.

Two cups of McDonald’s iced coffee (BUY!) sit on the Fox 5 TV news desk, a punch-you-in-the-face product placement (BUY!) to chase down your morning news.

They’ve been on the Las Vegas station set for about two weeks, following the lead of a few TV stations across the country, and they’re still looking every bit as frosty and tantalizing (BUY!) as they were the first day you laid your eyes on them.

But wait, here’s the best part: They’re not real. Fake coffee on the real news, two plastic cups permanently filled with some kind of bogus drink. The anchors aren’t even supposed to acknowledge them, McDonald’s reps explain.

Like rats? [Jul. 23rd, 2008|09:29 am]

"Real Clear Politics has an article about changes in party registration since the 2004 election. The Democrats have gained 700,000 people and the Republicans have lost 1 million in the 29 states that register voters by party."

See full note and breakdown in contested states here:

http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2008/Pres/Maps/Jul23.html

About 120 million people voted in the last Presidential election.
A swing of 1.7 million votes would therefore represent 1.4%, which
in and of itself could easily be enough to decide the election.

A while back, I described an incident where a vendor double-charged me for sales tax, related the customer service conversation I'd had with them, and posted a poll asking what the outcome would be.

Y'all predicted no refund by a landslide, and that's exactly what happened. However, one of you works for the small company in question, and has assured me that the bug has been fixed.

My new computer is here! It shipped so fast, and it came in an unmarked box, so it was very surprising and thus exciting to discover it tonight.

I've just barely met it, but it's so pretty and light and sleek and perfect and wonderful, I just know it is going to solve all my problems and organize my life and do my tasks for me. Together we're going to cure cancer, end aging, lose weight, win money, and land loads of hot babes. All the frustrations I've had with other computers will evaporate like the morning dew on a warm summer morning, and my life will be like the breeze that evaporates said dew on said summer morning.

I guess I have laptop NRE :).

Yummy! [Jul. 22nd, 2008|08:47 pm]

whipartist
My loft smelled wonderful when I walked in the door this evening. "Clarence! You cooked me dinner! That was sweet." But all he really did was stand watch over it all day.

Crock Pot Pulled Pork

about half a cup of ketchup
about half a cup of cider vinegar (you might like a little less)
maybe about a quarter cup of worcestershire sauce
about a quarter cup of brown sugar
about a tablespoon of mustard
an onion or two, chopped
a little bit of chopped garlic
salt and pepper
a little bit of something spicy (red pepper, cayenne, whatever)
a little bit of liquid smoke

Put it all in a crock pot and mix it up. Toss in a 3 pound or so pork roast. Turn the crock pot on low and let it all cook for about eight hours. Pull the meat apart with forks and let it cook a little while longer.

The *really* easy way to do this is a bottle of barbecue sauce and a roast.

on the plus side, I can lie on the futon and watch TV on the PS3 now, which is nice (and about what I feel up for). Recent Simpsons seasons (16) do suck, just like [info]boffo says. I'm going to try the cash game episodes of Poker After Dark season 4, which [info]perspectivism recommended.

Today's Phoenix update [Jul. 22nd, 2008|06:31 pm]

Spent most of the morning (a large part of it sitting on my lap at the computer )with the E-collar off and definitely seemed a lot happier that way. Drank a bunch of water, and took a really long pee (~30 seconds, which is reasonably long even by human standards). Still not too interested in eating, although did have ~1-2 more teaspoons of baby food -- I'm trying two different flavors too, chicken vs. turkey, which may not sound like a huge difference, but they do smell a bit different to me, so...

When I went downstairs to make lunch, I put the collar back on. He complained a bit about this but didn't put up too much of a fuss. Even with it on, he does seem in slightly better spirits today (and I am too :-) ). I ate lunch in front of the TV in my bedroom, and he wandered in to watch with me, staying on the bed for a while when I put him there. His gait seems steadier and stronger today though still not entirely devoid of quirks.

I'm still encouraged however, because yesterday he looked fairly pathetic, and today he looks more like "Fine, whatever, I guess I'll put up with this."

I'm gonna duck out for dinner and then try to give him most of the evening off the collar while we watch DVDs or something.

Meanwhile I've had DIETARY nongo, decent non-bingo racks that I've had to wreck, and some shitty weighty racks. Currently losing 177-321. IHTFG.

Code Hall of Shame [Jul. 22nd, 2008|01:04 pm]

OK, despite my earlier comment about wanting to highlight good code samples instead of bad ones, this "simple method to calculate the median" was too bad to pass up:

#6 Google hit for "python median"
http://codecomments.wordpress.com/2008/03/17/simple-method-to-calculate-median-in-python/

def getThreshold(numericValues):

  while len(numericValues) > 3:
    numericValues.pop(len(numericValues)-1)
    numericValues.pop(0)

  if len(numericValues) == 3:
    return numericValues[1]

  return (float(numericValues[0] + numericValues[1])) / 2

Works great if you've got a pre-sorted list you don't mind destroying as well as O(N^2) time to wait around for the answer.
